I was very excited about Ethan’s first school parents evening. Well when I got over the shock that I was actually old enough to be able to attend a parents evening where I wasn’t being discussed!
I really didn’t know what to expect and to be honest it didn’t go as I was expecting. I think I was expecting a list of this is what he is good at, this is what he is bad at and this it what we need to improve.
Perhaps that is how it works in mainstream but there was no negative in Ethan’s parents evening. Of course we were given a chart of his abilities and looking at it he is mostly sitting in the 0% to 10% bracket, but we didn’t focus on that.
Who needs to focus on the negative! We know our children struggle, they struggle everyday. Just putting on shoes can cause a major meltdown, but that is why we choose this setting for him.
It was lovely to discuss all the things that Ethan has been working on, mostly life-skills, but this is what it important for him to learn. Our goal is for Ethan to be able to live as independently as possible and that could take many years to achieve.
It was confirmed to us that Ethan is beginning to sight-read, something that I thought he was doing. I have been told what I can work with him on over the summer so that he doesn’t lose this skill.
We also told that they have started to introduce making sandwiches, again this is something that I want to encourage at home.
Ethan has been set some lovely targets, some educational but mostly targets to work on his independence. All of these I hope to work on over the summer.
We come away from parents evening knowing that we really had picked the right setting for Ethan’s education. We are so glad he is making progress there and it isn’t all about keeping up with mainstream targets.

Well done on E’s first parents evening, it can feel daunting and it’s always best to focus on the “can do”.
We choose D’s setting for the same reasons, we want her to learn life skills and feel confident, rather than numbers on a piece of paper.
The achievements will be so sweet when they arrive – and they will do!
