If you’re based in the South of England, then you’ll be pleased to learn that there are hundreds of seasonal activities taking place right on, or near to, your doorstep in the coming months. If you’re within reach of the Great Northern railway line, then you’ll find there are several dozen fantastic stops worth visiting over the season. Let’s run through some of the most eye-catching Great Northern route events.
Hitchin
In late December, this little market town will play host to a range of festive activities. Including carol singing in the town’s marketplace. Hitchin has an extensive history, and it’s home to some fantastically-preserved buildings. Every year, the local knitting society (Hitchin stitchin’) host a yarn festival. You’ll need to wait until next year for the next one.
Stevenage
To bring in the New Year, Bar & Beyond in Stevenage are putting on an exclusive party, featuring the beatmatching talents of superstar DJ Nathan Dawe. In February, the town will host its annual beer and cider festival. Purveyors from all around will be flogging their finest brews. Travelling from Hitchin to Stevenage is easy: you’re a mere five-minute train ride away.
Hatfield
In Hatfield, you’ll find Hatfield House, an eye-popping Jacobean Estate and garden where all manner of events are to take place over the festive period. There’s a festive sing-along in the grounds’ Stable House on the seventh. As well as Music for Christmas as the Old Palace on the eighth. When the weather starts to pick up again, there’ll be an opportunity to enjoy the estate’s wealth of rolling parkland, in the form of the Dogs and Daffs charity walk, in aid of the Riding for Disabled – Digswell Place Group.
Peterborough
In Peterborough, you’ll find a great place to kick-start your Christmas celebrations in the form of the Christmas Tree Festival, which runs from the sixth to the seventh of December. At around the same time, there’s the National Festival of Railway Modelling, which is a perfect way for fans of trains to amuse themselves.
Alexandra Palace
Within the M25, we have the iconic Alexandra Palace, which famously hosts fireworks every November to mark Bonfire Night. But that’s not the full extent of the fun on offer this year; there’s also the world championships of Ping Pong to enjoy in late January, and Pinocchio on Ice in the run-up to Christmas.
