In our age of technology, I see coding as an important skill to learn. I have always wanted to introduce a coding toy to the children but I have never found the right one. Learning Resources make a lovely range of different coding toys. They make a range called the Coding Critters that include dogs, cats, and dinosaurs. They have added bunnies to the collection and they sent Little E a set as an early Easter gift.

What Does Little E Love About Learning Resources Coding Critters?
Little E was very excited about her gift of bunnies. She couldn’t wait to play with them all. We are using the Coding Critters set as one of her home schooling activities.
I read the storybook to Little E. She coded Bopper to make him complete the activities which make up the story.
Coding Bopper to move is easy. You use the directional buttons on his back to tell him where you want him to go. Bopper can use a sequence of 30 steps to make him move. The up button makes him go forward, the back button makes him reverse. The left button will make him turn left and the right button right. With the directions set pressing the middle circle make him go!
When Little E first started to code with Bopper I placed the coding cards down. This was so that Little E knew which buttons she needed to push to make Bopper move in the directions needed.
It wasn’t long before Little E was coding Bopper to move all by herself. Without the prompting of the cards or the storybook.
Little E loves the extra bunnies Fluffy and Buffy in the Coding Critters Pair-A-Pets set. She has been having too much fun with Bopper to want to work out the coding challenges in their storybook coding adventure yet.
What Do I Love About Learning Resources Coding Critters?
I love how Little E has engaged with the bunnies. She has played with Bopper on numerous occasions and this is now her go-to toy of the moment.
I did wonder how easy Little E would find coding. Halfway through the coding storybook and she had worked out how to key in quite a long sequence.
What is also great about the coding critters is that they also double up as cute interactive pets. Pressing Bopper’s nose activates the ‘Play Mode’. This makes the directional buttons change into commands. You are then able to feed Bopper, as well as make him dance and sing a silly song.
When we first tried to use Bopper we tried to use him on our front room carpet. He struggled to move on our carpet so we set it up on our kitchen table. However, we did find that Bopper was able to move easier on our carpet the more he was played with.
We all really enjoyed the coding critters. If bunnies aren’t really your thing there are other critters to choose from.
