    It’s The Summer Holidays!

It’s official, we are on our summer holidays! It’s something I was dreading, and then I started to get excited about the prospect of having time off to enjoy with Ethan. Then last night the reality hit with a bump! I was expecting the break from routine would push Ethan out of his comfort zone. My plan of action for the summer holidays is to implement my Keep Ethan Busy plan. Every week I have planned something for us to do. I’m making sure that everyday we get out one of Ethan’s toys so that we can work on his letters and numbers. I’m also hoping that there are going…

    Sibling Interaction and Autism

When Ethan was diagnosed with autism the thought of having another child was the furthest thought from our minds. We were scared that another child would mean another diagnosis as there is a one in five chance that another child would also be on the spectrum. It took time but we always saw ourselves as a four and we decided not to give up on that dream. When we discussed this with Ethan’s pediatrician she actually advised us not to have any more children. Her reasons being that Ethan wouldn’t notice another sibling because he lives in his own little world. He can’t or wouldn’t show any empathy and don’t even…

    Minions – Autism Friendly Screening

Before children I used to love going to the cinema. I used to take my nieces and I was very excited about being able to do this with my own children. Being that Ethan doesn’t like to sit still the idea of taking him to the cinema was a daunting subject. As I think it’s very important for Ethan to experience new things we actually tried a cinema trip in December 2014 and 2013. Both times Ethan wouldn’t sit still and walked up and down our row the whole time. The experience in December 2014 was so bad that I actually come out of the cinema close to tears. I…

Autism and the Lack of Empathy?

We were told Ethan would lack empathy. That he wouldn’t bother with a sibling and therefore he didn’t need one. We have witnessed something very different. Yes there are times when Ethan is very indifferent to his sister and their relationship is still very much on his terms but we have witnessed empathy. The first definite sign of empathy was when Ethan and Little E were playing together. He managed to slightly catch her finger in one of the pop up toys and Little E broke her heart. This caused Ethan to become distressed and he too cried. This left me holding two very upset children both needing comfort. Little…

    Autism Awareness Day 2015

If you have been on social media today I’m sure you are aware that it is Autism Awareness Day. A day that hopes to make the population aware that autism is all around them. Unfortunately people do know the word Autism but this doesn’t mean that they know what Autism is. This isn’t something that makes me mad as I was one of those people, less than five years ago. In-fact it makes me sad that I wasn’t more aware. Autism was a word used for people who were in ‘their own world’, people who would do ‘strange’ movements and would most likely be covering their ears. I didn’t know…
