    Autism, Doors and Anxiety

Ethan has always had a thing for doors. From a very young age he would be fascinated with cupboard doors. If there was a cupboard Ethan would be there opening and closing the door. I suppose it was an obsession but it wasn’t one that was harmful in any way. As Ethan is getting older his autism is changing, we are discovering anxiety and how it can stop you in your tracks. This is also bringing on more meltdowns which can be interesting! Over the past month or so Ethan’s obsession with doors has changed and has got more intense. It started with the downstairs toilet, Ethan needed this door…

    Using The Crelling Harness

I blogged about how we had to find a new solution for Ethan’s car seat. It was something we were avoiding in the hope that Ethan would be able to understand the booster seat. Unfortunately we had to admit what we knew all along, and we had to put Ethan’s car safety first. A Crelling Harness was ordered and I had lots of fun fitting it into the car. I’m pleased to report that it’s the best thing we did. Ethan has taken to the harness without any issues, apart from when Darren has trouble fastening it!

    The Dentist Check Up

At the beginning of the month I got a text from our dentist reminding me it was time for Ethan’s six month check up. Even though we have been visiting the Special Needs Dentist with Ethan our main dentist wanted to keep Ethan’s appointments up-to-date. I wasn’t excited about booking the appointment as it can be a very stressful experience for all concerned, but we have to keep trying. One day the dentist might get to look and work in Ethan’s mouth. When we arrived we sat Ethan where he could watch the TV advertising all of the services our dentist now offers. It has a running text line on…

Autism, Car Seats and Crelling Harnesses

With autism you have to learn to live with the fact that a persons chronological age may not match their developmental age. I find it best to deal with this by not remembering Ethan’s physical age until his birthday. Unfortunately with getting older you grow and the baby items that you have used to keep your little one safe no longer do. The car seat hasn’t been the first thing that we have had work out but it has been the one that has caused us the most concern. Ethan needs to be safe in the car, not for him but for all of us. Ethan is now on his…

    Autism Diagnosis Two Year’s On…

It’s funny how certain dates through the year have a meaning to you in one way or another. It could be celebrations or sad milestones, a certain date can bring back memories and feelings. February the 6th is the day that we received Ethan’s diagnosis. I remembered the date last year and thought perhaps this year I would be too busy to even think about it. I was wrong, I was aware of the dates more than ever as I counted down the days this week until today. I don’t think I’m marking this date because it makes me sad, I just think it’s a date that I will never…
