Everyone loves a road trip; exploring new places, listening to music, and spending time with friends and family can make even long trips feel like the adventure of a lifetime. And, very often, there is usually an exciting, sometimes new, destination at the end of it.
To make sure that you get to that destination safely and in good time, it is vital to conduct a few checks before you set off. Here, we’re going to be breaking down four important things to look out for before hitting the road.
1. General vehicle maintenance and safety checks
To operate efficiently and safely, several things are happening in your car whilst driving. So, before setting off, carry out car checks to avoid any hiccups along the way.
Firstly, check your tyres; over time, the tread on them can deplete, causing poor grip. If the tread has worn down beyond 1.6mm, you legally need to change them. If your road trip takes you through the East Sussex region, consider heading to local tyre fitters in Lewes to ensure all four wheels are roadworthy.
Be sure to check there is enough air pressure in the tyres, too. If the pressure isn’t at the right level, top it up before setting off. Fluids such as engine oil, coolant, and windscreen wash help keep your car running smoothly, too, so make sure all are at the right level.
Finally, check that all your lights and indicators are working. Dipped beams and broken indicators can make it difficult for other road users to interpret your actions on the road, risking accidents.

2. Pack what you need for both comfort and safety
A road trip that includes all the items you and your loved ones need for an enjoyable and safe journey makes all the difference. In case of car trouble, make sure you have a tyre jack, reflective triangles, and jumper cables, should you need a jump start. If you have small children, make sure they have all the items they need to enjoy the road trip (and to keep disruption to a minimum!) such as snacks, water, and entertainment options.
If you’re relying on your phone’s GPS, bring a charger as well as enough fluids for you and the correct documentation, such as your driver’s license. Finally, if you’re driving through toll booths, have a card or change to hand to avoid any issues.
3. Plan your route and know where you’re staying
Without knowing where you’re going, your road trip is going to take a lot longer than you’d hoped. Making sure you plan your route before heading off is so important as it reduces stress and allows you to focus on your surroundings, safe in the knowledge you’re on the right path.
Using navigation apps on your smartphone and in-car sat navs can help you plan your journey and find rest stops along the way. And always have a physical, up-to-date map as a back up!
If your road trip is going to take more than a day, consider looking for and booking in advance accommodation so that you know you have somewhere to rest after a busy day driving.
4. Consider changes in weather and potential health issues
Despite the UK having a relatively mild, predictable climate, making sure that you know of any potential weather changes before your road trip can ensure you’re as prepared as possible (even with our unpredictable weather) to deal with rain, snow, or, in the summer, heat.
When driving in hot weather, having enough liquids on board to remain hydrated and an appropriate amount of sun cream to apply is vital for a comfortable driving experience.
Make sure you drive sensibly in the conditions presented to you and double-check the forecast before leaving.
Time to hit the road!
Road trips can be fun, and by making sure you have covered all the things mentioned here, you’re sure to enjoy a safe, memorable journey.
