No matter how long you’ll be spending behind the wheel, it’s so important to make sure that your car is ready for the journey. From tyre checks to air conditioning, here’s how to prepare your car for smooth and reliable road trips this summer.
1. Essential vehicle maintenance checks
Before setting off, try to carry out some inspections of your vehicle’s key components. These include checks on the:
- Engine oil: you should choose the correct oil and keep it within recommended range and free from contaminants. This check is best carried out using the dipstick tool in the car.
- Brake system, including pads and discs, for wear and proper functionality. Make sure you’re not getting any feedback or vibration sensations through the wheel when slowing down.
- Lights, including indicators, brake lights, headlights and fog lights. Ask a friend to walk around your vehicle. Some bulbs can be replaced at home, but others may require professional mechanical support.
2. Tyre inspection and care
Tyres are critical for your vehicle’s safety and fuel efficiency.
Take the time to examine your tyre pressure, as it can fluctuate with temperature changes. If it’s above or below the manufacturer’s recommended range, you should adjust it accordingly. You can use a foot pump, track pump, or air machine at your nearest fuel station.
You should also check your tread depth to make sure that it’s well above the legal minimum of 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre.
3. Legal requirements and documents
Make sure that all your documents are up to date and accessible.
You’re legally required to be able to prove a valid driving licence, MOT certificate, and accurate vehicle registration. If you have a private number plate on your car, it should be registered and legally spaced.
If you’ll be crossing borders, it’s worth getting familiar with the local driving requirements of each country, as some may require additional documents or legalities. Above all, having a car insurance policy in place keeps you covered against the unexpected.
4. Cooling system and air conditioning
Powerful and efficient air conditioning might be a cornerstone of any successful summertime road trip. There’s nothing worse than being squeezed inside a hot, stuffy vehicle, especially when stuck in traffic!
Add pets and children to the equation, and it’s clear that air conditioning helps to keep everyone safe and healthy, too. Inside the cabin is important for you and your passengers, but your engine needs to stay cool, too.
A properly functioning cooling system will help to prevent your engine from overheating during hotter weather. Try to check your coolant levels weekly and inspect hoses for leaks or wear – your radiator should be free from leaks or obstructions too.
