Singing Happy Birthday!

When you are a special needs parent you have to get used to the fact that you walk a different developmental path. It’s not always easy and sometimes there are moments when the green-eyed monster rears its ugly head.

I experience this feeling around birthdays and Christmas as the excitement build up, that probably drives other people mad, we don’t get to experience.

As Ethan is a very visual boy we have made sure that everyone’s birthday gets celebrated with a birthday cake, cards and gifts so that Ethan is aware it is a different day. For Ethan’s birthday we fill the front  room with balloons.

Ethan’s speech is something I long for and I was envious of seeing videos of other people’s children singing them Happy Birthday.

At five years old Ethan will now sing Happy Birthday when he sees greetings cards or cake. I love this and it is something I wanted to capture. My little boy singing Happy Birthday!

It was actually Grandad’s birthday but I filmed Ethan singing later in the day.

  1. Yay! Well done Ethan!
It was fantastic to see and hear, he has the cutest little voice. Wonderful!
Hopefully the excitement around birthdays and occasions will come, it took D until she was about 8 to recognise “special days” and her enthusiasm is very infectious now! X

I really hope it comes too, until then we will be as visual as possible so that he knows it is a special day x
